“The photographic work “The Element of Surprise” was conceived while exploring the site of Historic Old Sturbridge Village on a lovely mid-winter morning. Old Sturbridge Village is located in Sturbridge, Massachusetts USA and deems itself the countries largest “living history museum”. The village encompasses life in the period 1790-1840 and is a true representation of early New England (Northeast Region of the United States) in every aspect of the word. Visitors may stroll through the village at their leisure and explore its many historic buildings while observing and even participating in the activities of period life being acted out by fully costumed townsfolk actors.
Much to my fortune, this photographic work “The Element of Surprise” was taken on a day when not only was the weather quite cooperative and the visiting crowds were also minimal. At the time of the photo, we happened upon a cobbler shop and upon opening the door, the cobbler that appeared inside seemed just as surprised to see us as we were to see him. Lips pursed, hard at work, performing his trade the “art of shoemaking” and with one click of my camera we have the final result…hence “The Element of Surprise”!”
